Exploring on Your Own
These are the activities most highly recommend
by your Gathering Committee!
* The hotel is within walking distance of Albuquerque’s Old Town http://www.albuquerqueoldtown.com. The buildings around the Old Town plaza and on the side streets are authentic adobes, up to 300 years old. You will also find a
shopping center with stores selling goods ranging from fine arts and jewelry to tourist trinkets, as well as Indians
selling their wares on the sidewalk. It's a lively place, and one of Albuquerque's premier tourist attractions.
* Docent-led tours start at the Albuquerque Museum of Art, History and Science
http://www.cabq.gov/museum or you can pick up their self-guided tour brochure. For a spooky good time, take an
evening tour with New Mexico Ghost Tours and learn where the haunts hang out. The Museum itself has many
exciting exhibits, including 400 years of New Mexico history, a Celebration of New Mexico's 2012
Centennial, and a Hispanic Arts show that willbe opening during the Gathering weekend.
* The New Mexico Museum of Natural
History and Science http://www.nmnaturalhistory.org is an exhilarating museum where science comes
to life. Features include New Mexico's newest Tyrannosaur, a life-sized Quetzalcoatlus soaring in the atrium,
a planetarium show, a walk-through volcano, and a comet-busting adventure ride.
* The American International Rattlesnake Museum http://www.rattlesnakes.com is located inside an Old Town gift
shop. The owners claim to have the world's largest collection of live rattlesnakes.
* Outside of Old Town, there is an exciting Aerial Tram http://www.sandiapeak.com billed as the longest
single-span tram in the world. Ride it to the peak of our Sandia (watermelon) Mountain - 11,000 square miles of
scenery to take in!
* New Mexico State Fair http://www.exponm.com/fair, one of the largest in the
U.S., will be in full swing with professional rodeo
http://www.exponm.com/fair/entertainment/concertsrodeos.asp in the evening and many exhibits during the
day.
* The Botanical Gardens http://www.cabq.gov/biopark/garden are a few blocks from the hotel and have charming themed gardens, a butterfly pavilion, and an aquarium with sharks and sea turtles swimming by
inside the really excellent on-site restaurant. An enjoyable short train ride takes visitors to the
Albuquerque Zoo http://www.cabq.gov/biopark/zoo. (One entrance fee provides access to both.)
* The
Indian Pueblo Cultural Center http://www.indianpueblo.org is an excellent museum in a stunning
building with exhibits providing an outstanding introduction to the 19 pueblos of the Southwest. Sunday features live Native Performers and refreshments on the outside patio at 11:00AM and 2:00PM.
* The New Mexico Rail
Runner Express http://nmrailrunner.com departs from Albuquerque and delivers passengers to Santa Fe.
Enjoy shops, galleries and restaurants in Santa Fe, then and ride the Rail Runner back to Albuquerque. Check the website in early September for current Sunday schedules.
